Who we are

Founded in 2026 by Dr. Alexandra Chea, the Nassau Youth Philharmonic is a dynamic, tuition-free youth orchestra based in Nassau, The Bahamas, committed to expanding access to high-quality music education for young musicians across the island. As the first and only youth symphony orchestra program in the country, it provides rigorous orchestral training, mentorship, and performance opportunities that empower students to develop their artistic voice, build discipline and confidence, and pursue excellence on both local and international stages.

Rooted in a vision of equity and cultural enrichment, the organization is not only shaping the next generation of musicians but also cultivating a deeper appreciation for classical music within the Bahamian community. With a commitment to growth and excellence, the Nassau Youth Philharmonic aspires to develop to a level where its students can stand on an even playing field with youth symphonies around the world.

Our Goal

Our goal is to provide accessible, high-quality music education that prepares Bahamian students to successfully audition for international music festivals, summer programs, and collegiate opportunities. Through exposure to masterclasses, guest conductors, guest artists, and experienced educators, we aim to equip students with the skills, insight, and inspiration needed to transform their musical journeys and expand their opportunities far beyond the island.

Meet our Founder

Dr. Alexandra Chea is the Founder and Executive Director of the Nassau Youth Philharmonic (NYP), and a trailblazer in Bahamian classical music as the first Bahamian—and the first woman in the country—to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Clarinet Performance.

“It’s 2026, and young musicians in The Bahamas still haven’t had the opportunity to experience a youth symphony orchestra. I can’t accept that. Being part of an ensemble like this opens doors, builds discipline, and creates opportunities that are truly life-changing—and it’s time our students are given the same chance to grow, perform, and thrive as their peers around the world.”
